Emulsion Rust Inhibitor for Mechanical Components

A company specializing in metal machining contacted us with the need to identify a high-performance protective coating. The product had to protect mechanical components destined for the automotive sector.

These parts, once assembled, are turned and subsequently washed in a washing system. The problem arose once the parts were stored in the warehouse, as rust initiation formed on the surface of the parts.

Currently, they are using a water-based passivator in the washing machine and are looking for a more effective product that allows them to better protect the parts.

We asked the client to provide us with parts to proceed with laboratory tests.

Our Solution

During the visit to the client, we reviewed their production cycle and washing system. It is a single-stage spray washing machine equipped with a hot air vacuum oven for drying. Once the machining is completed, the parts are dirty with cutting fluid and enter directly into the washing line.

The client required that the product meet the following points:

• The protection of the parts must be at least 3 months;
• The residue of the product on the part must not create problems in the phases subsequent to washing;
• The product must be compatible with the cutting fluid residue present on the surface of the parts.

Based on these indications, we started laboratory tests.

The tests were carried out by comparing some Surfatek protective coatings, both water-based and non-water-based, with the product used by the client. Once washed, the parts were placed in a humidity chamber.

This test allows us to identify the product with the highest degree of protection in an “accelerated way.”

Results

The results of the humidity chamber showed that the emulsion protective coating called PROTEK OIL MR was the most effective among those tested.

PROTEK OIL MR is a low-viscosity emulsion protective coating that, at the appropriate usage concentrations, guarantees excellent protection to the surfaces on which it is applied. If dried properly, it leaves a light layer of oil on the treated surface, which provides protection against atmospheric agents, preventing the formation of rust. PROTEK OIL MR is a product that is used at room temperature and therefore allows significant energy savings for those who use it.

We recommended that the client carry out a test directly on their system, so as to confirm the results of the tests carried out in the laboratory and verify that the protective coating fully meets their needs.

After further tests, the client decided to adopt and approve PROTEK OIL MR within their production cycle.
