A defoaming agent, is a chemical additive whose function is to reduce and hinder the formation of foam from any industrial process. It has the property of being insoluble into the foaming solution, causing air bubble breakdown and surface foam disintegration.

In the industrial field, foams are usually formed by surfactants contained in cleaners, degreasers, in some types of lubricating oils or cooling lubricants, or due to saponifications that may occur among alkaline detergents and oils or greases. Foams can be generated during washing operations or process water treatment.

Defoamers can be dosed either manually, for a corrective action and only if necessary, or preventively using proper automatic dosing systems.
